Addenbrookes Abroad
About us
Addenbrooke’s Abroad was set up amidst increasing recognition - within the NHS and at Cambridge University Hospitals - that engaging in global health work can have incredible benefits for the UK and the NHS, by not only building strong relationships across the globe, but by broadening the education of health professionals within the UK.
Addenbrooke’s Abroad’s supports global health partnerships (Links) so that staff and students from Cambridge University Hospitals and the surrounding health community can share their incredible knowledge and skills in countries where they are most needed.
"Links allow NHS staff to contribute to the improvement of healthcare worldwide, whilst continuing to serve their own communities. Links motivate staff, enlarge their experience, sharpen their skills and thus help to retain them within each country’s National Health Service: the benefits are clearly felt by both English and overseas partners" (Lord Crisp, Former Chief Executive of the NHS in England commenting on his support of the project).
What we do
Since 2006, Addenbrooke’s Abroad has supported over 100 volunteer placements in 25 countries, including within our two established institutional partnerships with; the Princess Marina Hospital in Botswana and, with the National Maternity Hospital in El Salvador.
Through the organisation and support of Addenbrooke’s Abroad, volunteers are able to teach and learn new skills, to treat patients and to establish long–term partnerships. By encouraging reciprocal learning schemes and hosting overseas staff on study visits to the UK, we can bring new energy and enthusiasm to partners abroad who are dedicated to change, and, share our own experiences with NHS colleagues back home.
What we’re raising funds for
All volunteers who can pay their own costs are expected to do so – they do not receive funds from NHS sources. Funding is needed to support volunteers who cannot pay their own costs, to coordinate structural organisational support from Addenbrooke’s Abroad and to help with the development of our partnerships abroad.
Current target
