Bromley by Bow Centre

About us

Bromley by Bow Centre is an innovative community organisation in east London. Working in one of the most deprived wards in the UK, we support families, young people and adults of all ages and backgrounds to learn new skills, improve their health and wellbeing, find employment and develop the confidence to achieve their goals.

We provide an integrated range of services, run locally, where people need them and can access them. We pride ourselves on the quality of these services, delivered in beautiful buildings, set around a courtyard and surrounded by a park, providing a positive, inspiring and welcoming environment.

We use the arts to tap into everyone’s inbuilt creativity and resourcefulness, instil self-confidence and open people’s eyes to learning and the opportunities that follow.

Through a partnership between the private, public and voluntary sectors, we serve thousands of people in east London with more than 100 community projects, GP practice and social enterprises providing everything from landscape gardening to leadership classes.

We are a major driver in creating local jobs, opportunities and wealth, helping to raise aspirations and support people to transform their lives. And we share our experience more widely, helping to transform other deprived communities.

At the core of the Centre’s thinking is our belief in people and their capacity to do amazing things.

What we do

Bromley by Bow Centre’s work focuses on four main areas:

  • Overcoming chronic illness and unhealthy lifestyles by delivering programmes that tackle causes rather than symptoms
  • Giving people the opportunities to learn new skills and reach their full potential
  • Supporting people in becoming less grant-dependent and in finding work
  • Creating new and dynamic businesses that boost the economy of east London, improve services and generate jobs for local people.

Examples of how we do this:

  • Working Wonders helps vulnerable adults with learning difficulties, physical and mental health problems and isolated elders through a creative combination of gardening, art-related and healthy lifestyle activities.
  • More than 800 students enrolled for courses at the beginning of the academic year. Courses range from English for speakers of other languages, through NVQs geared towards local job opportunities, to Communiversity, a BA in Social Enterprise.
  • Our specialist advisers help xxx people every week by providing confidential and impartial welfare and benefits advice and supporting them in taking the first steps to break out of poverty.
  • Over the past two years, the Women’s Capability Initiative has engaged and supported 120 BME women, primarily from the Bangladeshi, Somali and Turkish communities, who had English language and employability needs to become job ready.
  • Since 2005, Beyond Business has been the catalyst for the launch of 28 successful new social enterprises with a combined turnover of more than £3 million and has created 200 new jobs.

What we’re raising funds for

We face significant challenges over the coming months and already more people are using our services as a result of wider changes in society. Yet, we face a real challenge in securing funding to meet even the existing levels of need. We are raising funds to:

Support people in crisis: providing specialist financial advice services to help those families hardest hit by the recession and offering them the support they need to get back on track, and helping young people to learn the basics of managing money to reduce the likelihood of crippling debt for the next generation.

Extend opportunities: engaging new employers coming into the area to create training and employment opportunities so that vulnerable adults living locally – many never having worked – can learn vital skills and find a job.
