Community Links
About us
Community Links tackles the causes and consequences of social exclusion. Our local work is based in Newham, east London, one of the most deprived areas in the country. A quarter of all children in Newham live in severe poverty, unemployment rates are high and the numbers of young people not in education, employment or training is the highest in London.
Community Links runs a network of community projects, reaching over 25,000 vulnerable children, young people, adults and older people each year. We give people the help and support they need to tackle their own problems, to climb out of poverty and to reach out to a brighter future.
We’ve helped tens of thousands of people in deprived neighbourhoods in east London for over 30 years. We use this experience to shape our national policy and campaigning work which aims to tackle the root causes of poverty and generate lasting social change.
What we do
Community Links work is based around our four Aims:
- Tackling Poverty – making sure that families have access to the basics.
- Raising Aspirations for a better life – inspiring hopes and dreams and determination.
- Extending opportunities in education and employment – helping young people get the qualifications they need and supporting people into work.
- Building stronger neighbourhoods – creating places for people to get to know one another, spaces for children to play and safer communities.
Our Track Record includes:
- Each year we advise around 10,000 people with benefits, housing and debt problems.
- We run youth clubs and children’s activities for over 3,000 children and young people each year.
- Our OFSTED registered school Education Links works with up to 120 students each year who have been excluded from mainstream education.
- We help around 5,000 people each year to work towards sustainable employment.
What We’re Raising Funds for
There are a number of areas of our work where funding is needed to keep vital services for local communities running.
Advice Work
Our specialist Advisors help around 10,000 each year with debt, housing and welfare benefit advice. Currently much debt and housing advice is being a cut at a time when it is likely there will be a rise in evictions and financial hardship as a result of major changes to the Benefits System and Legal Aid. We are seeking funding to help cover the salary costs of one of our full-time Advisors.
Youth Work
Life is tough for many of the people we work with in east London – and getting tougher.
Young people with nothing to look forward to beyond their next mobile phone upgrade are facing escalating youth unemployment. Engaging young people through our youth work programme we aim to broaden horizons and offer safe alternatives to hanging around on the streets. Our youth work team engage with young people, building trust and diverting them towards positive activities in our youth centres. Building young people’s aspirations, self-confidence and self-esteem, enables them to make a positive next step, including volunteering programmes and our into training and employment programmes. We are seeking funding for the costs of running our outreach youth work programme and youth centre costs.
Our Target
Our fundraising target through Allia is £200,000.
