About us

Tackling the double challenge of climate change and fuel poverty.

Climate change is probably the biggest threat to the future of human society as we know it, but to the majority of people it is a vague, indeterminable threat which doesn’t seem to affect their daily lives. At the same time thousands of people are struggling to stay warm in the winter and to cope with ever rising fuel bills, their main concern being how to avoid falling heavily into debt rather than the melting of the ice caps.

Since 1999 Energy Solutions has been working on the ground in a relatively small but densely populated geographical area – North West London – among the most diverse communities in the UK, many of whom are refugees or other recent migrants for whom boiler controls and fuel bills are challenges they have never had to face before.

Unlike remote telephone help lines we work face to face with people in their homes, workplaces and community centres, bringing together all the issues which connect energy consumption, building energy efficiency, human comfort, lifestyle and financial means.

What we do

The main achievements of Energy Solutions can be summarised as follows:

  • More than 4000 vulnerable clients have received home visits, all of which have resulted in some alleviation of fuel poverty, from simple draughtproofing measures installled on the spot to grant-funded installations of insulation and heating systems, to helping write off fuel debts.
  • over 700 individuals a year receive energy efficiency advice over the phone or in person;
  • more than 500 homes in North West London have had energy audits carried out followed by detailed reports on how energy consumption and carbon emissions can be reduced;
  • around 1500 businesses have received walk-round energy surveys and recommendations for improvement
  • every year we work with schools to develop a ‘Whole School Approach’ involving Governors, Staff, Parents and Pupils in common goals to manage the carbon and ecological footprint of their school.
  • the London Borough of Brent has been provided with a Fuel Poverty Strategy and expertise contributed to develop its Carbon Management and Climate Change Strategies;
  • Energy Solutions has converted a redundant chapel building into a demonstration zero-carbon office for its own use and a community meeting/training facility.

What we’re raising funds for

Like so many small charities we struggle to raise enough money each year to provide the services we need to and there is always more we want to be doing.

We want in particular to put all our Fuel Poverty services together into a ‘Final Demand’ package which we can offer to social housing providers and utility companies for their tenants and customers. We know that we can no longer rely on the public purse to fund these services and must actively pursue other funding sources.

We also want to expand the work we do in schools so that we can build long-term relationships which will produce year-on-year improvements in their energy and environmental performance, but to do all this we need a sufficient financial cushion to allow staff to take time off from their daily commitments to focus on developing the organisation as a whole.
