International Health Partners

About us

International Health Partners (IHP) is the single UK coordinator of donated medicines to the developing world, working on behalf of the UK’s medical charities, the medical community, the British Government and the pharmaceutical industry.  Established at the time of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, IHP is a UK registered charity and has HRH The Prince of Wales as its patron.  In the last 7 years IHP has donated over £85m of medicines to 300 projects in 80 countries.

IHP has been supporting the healthcare needs of Pakistan for over 5 years, responding to the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, the Balochistan Floods in 2006, the Waziristan conflict in 2009 and most recently the 2010 Monsoon Floods.  It works in partnership with the World Health Organisation, the Ministry of Health (federally and provincially) and with all the main international medical charities (including the members of the UK’s Disaster Emergency Committee).

What we do

One third of the world’s population lack access to the medicines that we take for granted.  Counterfeit medicines and corruption abound in the developing world.  IHP was set up as a collaborative venture across the UK aid community to ensure that first quality medicines can get safely and securely to those who need them most.  IHP has a number of programmes, including:

  • Humanitarian Aid – coordinating the UK response to world disasters, providing medicines directly to the WHO and the international medical teams on the ground;
  • Doctor’s Travel Packs – providing mobile dispensaries of 1,000 treatments to medical professionals travelling overseas on voluntary service, medical missions or disaster response;
  • Partnership Projects – supporting medical projects over a number of years with the specific aim of increasing the size, expertise or scope in a sustainable way;
  • Maternal and Child Care – equipping medics, charities and Ministries of Health with medicines and/or expertise to improve healthcare to women and children;
  • Medical Supply Chain – working with industry, universities and hospitals to improve the handling, monitoring and management of medicines and identify counterfeit drugs;

What we are raising funds for

There are over 100million people in Pakistan living below the poverty line (earning less than £1 a day).  The effects of the Monsoon Floods in 2010 were greater than the 2005 earthquake, the Asian Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 Haitian earthquake combined!  The health system across Pakistan has been devastated.

The return provided from the Allia bonds will enable IHP to:

  • provide over 5 million treatments to individuals who presently are too poor to access medicines;
  • establish the first 5 public neonatal screening centres in Pakistan in major reference hospitals to screen the 50,000 babies most at risk each year – a service we take for granted in the West;
  • establish 5 specialist obstetric surgical centres in another 5 reference hospitals to treat women who need specialist surgery following complications in labour;
  • provide training in medicine handling and supply chain management in the main reference hospitals in Punjab and Sindh Provinces; and
  • pay for the sourcing, transport, and safe distribution of £50million of donated medicines.

Our target

IHP has partners in the UK, Europe and North America who are willing to donate medicines for this project.  We have a number of corporate, university and hospital partners who will provide the relevant skills, training and mentoring to establish the facilities and centres of excellence in maternal and child care.   Our target is to raise £10m in Allia bonds to make this project a reality.
