Our Sansar
About us
Our Sansar provides education, healthcare and shelter to the most disadvantaged and vulnerable children in Nepal. We provide these services in areas which are largely unsupported, where we can reach people in desperate need of help.
Since 2009, Our Sansar’s work has benefitted 1,174 children; we work closely with a number of Nepalese NGO’s and the local community to provide holistic and effective programmes. With plans to send 11 teachers and 5 teacher trainers in 2011/12 and our pilot home for street children planned for August 2011 the number of children we can help is set to exceed 4,750. We’re very grateful that you are considering helping us achieve these goals, enabling us to impact on so many young lives.
What we do
We are currently running two linked projects in Nepal.
Our Nepalese Child Education project ensures disadvantaged children have access to the basic education they desperately need and also supports teacher training in Nepal, raising the standard of the education offered in poor communities.
One of the major problems within the educational system in Nepal, particularly in rural areas, is a lack of motivation and qualifications amongst the teachers. The salaries are very low and frequently the teachers are educated only to the equivalent of GCSE level with a lack of enthusiasm to expand their skills. The lessons themselves tend to lack any interaction between the teacher and the students, resulting in high rates of both student and teacher absenteeism.
Over the next year we intend to improve the educational standard and experience for both teachers and pupils by providing British Council training for 20 local teachers. This initiative will be further supported with 5 teacher trainers and 11 teachers working closely with local schools and teachers to better skills, confidence and practises.
Our Children’s Shelter project will provide the security, shelter and counselling that street children require to escape the dangers of drugs and violence they encounter and will help them remain in school.
600 children arrive on the streets of Kathmandu each year, lured by the false perception of great opportunity they instead fall victim to abuse and exploitation. The sad reality is that street children are at the highest risk of murder, abuse, exploitation and trafficking, with the large majority resorting to petty theft, begging and prostitution to survive.
With an estimated 200 street children in Chitwan, this is where we will provide our pilot home for street children. There is only 1 other organisation in this district providing just shelter to 14 street children. To truly help these children turn their lives around, they need a complete package of services; shelter, care, food, education, skills training and most importantly professionals to help them tackle their psychological problems.
Our Sansar will provide these with a view to re-uniting them with their families over a period of time. We are partnering with local organisations and businesses that will be able to provide the children with internships increasing their employment prospects and showing them an alternative to life on the streets.
What we’re raising funds for
As a non-governmental organisation we are responsible for raising the money we need each year to survive. We rely on external grants and individual donations to carry out our work providing education, healthcare and shelter to the most disadvantaged and vulnerable children in Nepal.
Our mission is to provide these services in areas which are lacking this vital support; your donation will go a long way in Nepal to help impoverished communities.
All funds raised will be going towards our current projects, helping us to help under-privileged children in Nepal.
Current target for fundraising with Allia
