Paddington Development Trust
About us
“Paddington Development Trust is a great example of how a social enterprise can make a real difference to a community. The support, advice and services they provide are making a huge difference to people in their area”. Nick Hurd Cabinet Minister for Civil Society, on his first visit to PDT as Minister for Civil Societyon 20th May 2010 (Ref1 cabinet office – report CAB 065-10).
PDT works in poor areas situated in four of the most deprived wards in the UK with a combined population of 60,000 people living in the north of City of Westminster, an area often ignored because of its proximity to the national centre of power and wealth. The area is highly diverse with 46% of local residents belonging to an ethnic minority. It has one of the largest Arabic speaking populations in the UK. Each of the wards is in the highest band of the indices of national deprivation. (Ref Westminster’s Joint Strategic Needs Assessment - Westminster Ward Profiles, September 2010).
What we do
- We serve four Neighbourhood Hubs with small staff teams of three people who represent the local interests of both local people and public service providers, and manages a wide range of activities and outreach for literally hundreds of volunteers
- We are launching the first attempt to apply the new Localism Bill and Big Society through the formation of the Queens Park Ward Council - the first in London - apart from supporting local people in the endeavour we are creating a model of new local governance and decision making in poorer neighbourhoods
- We lead a consortium of local social enterprises in providing mentoring, support and skills training for local people looking for work
- We have established and run one of the first UK Neighbourhood Enterprise Agencies micro finance schemes for local people looking to work for themselves
- We also run the North Westminster Youth Service through the Stowe Centre, a purpose built Youth Enterprise and Sports hub producing boxing champions as well as creative talent
- PDT champions a host of small resident-based projects across all neighbourhoods, including local festivals, gardening competitions, firework displays, salsa, talent shows etc
Our work is neighbourhood based so all our resources go to improving the well-being of both local people and the local environment where we all live and work. Over the last two years we have worked with and found work for over 400 people from within the four wards and created 750 volunteering opportunities within the community. We also sponsor a series of local events, present the Paddington Festival and link to a number of business networks. Our strategic partners are City of Westminster University, Development Trusts Association, Julies Bicycle, Westminster Council, Carnival Village, GLA, local GP Clusters and Capital Enterprise. We have a mixed funding portfolio which includes public contracts, charitable donations and fees.
What we are raising funds for
PDT’s Big Society Bonding programme will ensure that people isolated from the benefits of a Big Society, including access to work, skills training, healthcare, English language teaching, education, and personal wellbeing, are given the tools to enable self-help and reliance and to determine the best way of doing things for themselves and for their neighbourhood.
PDT Projects
