Rosie Hospital Campaign

Rosie Hospital Campaign

About us

Part of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the Rosie Hospital was opened in 1983, with the aid of funds donated by local entrepreneur Sir David Robinson. It acts as the main regional maternity hospital for the East of England.

What we do

One of the UK’s best performing maternity hospitals, the Rosie provides women and babies in the Cambridge area with first-class maternity, neonatal and gynaecological services in a safe, clean and friendly environment.

The Rosie is a referral centre for the East of England and one of only three ‘Level 3’ designated neonatal units in the region that can treat sick newborns with complex medical problems and those who require surgery. In addition, the Rosie is home to the regional Acute Neonatal Transport Service (ANTS), providing 24/7 transport for sick babies across the East of England.

A wide range of outpatient services are also available including early pregnancy support, reproductive medicine and urogynaecology.

What we are raising funds for

After almost thirty years, demand for maternity care in Cambridge and the surrounding area has outgrown the capacity of the Rosie, which was originally designed to cope with up to 4,000 births per year. In 2008/09 over 5,700 babies were delivered and we expect this figure to reach 7,500 by 2020.

As part of the 2020 Vision, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is extended this renowned hospital, developing a purpose-built, three-storey facility that will put patient care at the heart of a greatly expanded and evolving women’s health and maternity service.

This will help us to:

  • Deliver first-rate care in modern surroundings
  • Meet predicted demand
  • Improve patient safety and choice
  • Support education and research

New facilities will include:

  • Imaging Centre for Women and Children – A dedicated department that will use pioneering multimodal, non-invasive imaging techniques to monitor pregnant women, babies in the womb and newborn infants as part of their critical care.
  • Neonatal Intensive and Special Care Baby Unit – The 58-cot unit will offer high-quality care to the sickest, most susceptible babies from across the East of England.
  • Fetal Medicine and Day Assessment Unit – An investigative scanning facility for monitoring fetal development and detecting abnormalities, including a major treatment room for in-utero laser therapy and other invasive procedures.
  • Parent and Family Accommodation – A residential centre of eight en-suite rooms for the parents of critically ill infants, providing a calm facility away from the clinical environment.
  • Birth Centre – This 10-bedroom midwife-led unit for low-risk pregnancies will be a relaxed environment for patients, encouraging a natural, healthy birthing experience for many women.
  • Counselling Suite – A range of specialist counselling rooms, to provide specialist support to parents and families when outcomes have not been as hoped.

Our target

Almost £30 million of funding is being marshalled to make this exciting project a reality, £7 million of which must be found from philanthropic sources. Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has secured a loan for the remainder.

A structured fundraising campaign is underway to raise the £7 million. We are delighted that since fundraising began in January 2010, the Rosie Hospital campaign has already raised close to £3 million. However, we have a long way to go and are seeking further support from businesses, individuals, trusts and foundations, and the local community in order to reach our goal. We hope to raise the full £7 million by the time the Rosie opens in mid 2012. In order to encourage giving, especially at a higher level, we have a number of opportunities for naming recognition available at various levels of gift. The Campaign team are happy to discuss these with potential donors.
