The Challenge Network

About us

Our mission is to be the most successful organisation in Britain at building a sense of belonging, trust and active participation in communities with generations of young people.

The Challenge’s goals are to:

1)            Bring people together across social, economic, ethnic, age and religious divides

2)            Provide a ‘rite of passage’ – helping transition to adulthood

3)            Foster higher levels of engagement in communities

What we do

We achieve our mission through The Challenge programme which brings together young people of different backgrounds and, through a series of physical and civic challenges, inspires and enables them to take on more active roles in their communities. The programme occurs over three weeks in the summer and four weekends in September:

  • Personal Challenge (week 1): Through intense outdoor activities (e.g., hiking expeditions, climbing) participants are challenged to overcome their fears, thus building confidence, self-awareness and team work skills
  • Team Challenge (week 2): Teams are challenged to learn a new skill (sport, media, performance, enterprise or photography) and use it as a medium for interaction with local community partners
  • Real Challenge Design (week 3): Teams are tasked with designing a fundraising project to help a local charity, and a campaign challenge to address a local issue. Teams pitch their ideas to a panel of judges for feedback and funding
  • Real Challenge Action (September): Teams deliver the projects they designed and make a mark in the community
  • The Challenge Society (on-going): Graduates automatically join The Challenge Society and stay engaged in their communities through signposted voluntary organisations, regular social action events, and engage in activities of The The Challengeas mentors or young ambassadors for the programme.

What we’re raising funds for

Money raised through Allia will go towards funding our Challenge society Programme.

We believe that increased confidence and trust that the young people gain in the summer programme is merely the beginning, and that true success is defined by on-going participation in the community.  After completing The Challenge, young people are excited and motivated to make a difference in their communities. It is crucial to have a graduate programme to capitalise on this excitement and provide the necessary support for lasting impact.

Our on-going programme is called The Challenge Society. The Challenge Society encompasses all graduate activity including the Challenge with Distinction award, on-going volunteering opportunities with other organisations, monthly social action projects, core programme development, youth led community projects, mentoring for graduates who are or are at risk of becoming NEETs, and the opportunity to return to the programme as Associate Mentors.

Our goal is to enable 2,700 young people in 2011 and 7,200 young people in 2012 (representing 85% participants) to:

  • continue to develop and implement social action projects in their local community following the Challenge summer programme
  • maintain or improve levels of confidence and trust developed on the Challenge summer programme
  • continue to work in teams of socially mixed young people and engage with members of the community of a variety of backgrounds and ages.
